Legislative Building Art Collection

Art has always been an integral aspect of the Legislative Building. Walter Scott, the first premier of the province, commissioned a series of pastel portraits of Indian leaders in 1910 for the new Legislative Building even before construction was completed.

The Provincial Secretary of Saskatchewan is responsible for the collection and gave it the official designation of the Legislative Building Art Collection in 1990. This responsibility includes the commissioning of new artwork, developing and maintaining documentation and historical records, and the restoration and conservation of the collection.

Over the years, the collection has grown and today contains over 200 pieces, including portraits painted by nationally and internationally renowned artists, as well as busts, sculptures, murals and photographs. Special galleries were designed for the portraits of the province's lieutenant governors (Qu'Appelle Gallery) and premiers (Saskatchewan Gallery). The Legislative Building Art Collection has become a unique treasure and asset, preserved for all Saskatchewan residents and future generations.
